The Qualities of a Good Student


The definition of student is simple: someone who attends classes or studies in a school. A student is serious about a subject and aims to learn it well. They are usually enrolled in a university or college. The term “student” comes from the Latin “studere,” which means “to study.”

A good student is one who actively participates in class, pays attention to lectures and course materials, and develops a personal rapport with their professors. While every professor has his or her own criteria for earning an A, most professors would agree on the following characteristics of a good student:

Students are the future of a nation. Parents and teachers must groom them to be responsible citizens and leaders. They are entrusted with many duties and responsibilities. Throughout their lives, students have responsibilities to their school and to their community. They should perform these duties and responsibilities with pride and diligence. Those who participate in school council activities develop positive leadership skills. They also build school pride and feel more engaged in their school community. It is a win-win situation for students, parents, and teachers.

Good students maintain positive relationships with their instructors. They respect the instructor’s authority both in and outside of the classroom. Students who attend office hours should make appointments and be respectful of their instructor’s privacy. Since many instructors have hectic schedules, they are often unavailable outside of the classroom. Being available outside of the classroom is an important part of their jobs. The benefits of online learning far outweigh the disadvantages. They’re cheaper, easier to travel, and save on time.

Students in Canada are grouped by grade levels. Elementary school students are called plebes, while middle school students are known as yearlings. High school students are referred to as juniors, seniors, and super seniors. Although the terms are often used to differentiate different grades, they are generally the same in terms of age and gender. Some colleges use colloquial terms such as “sophos” or “super seniors.”

The concept of student agency is a critical component of personalized learning. By allowing students to take charge of their learning, instructors can promote the development of student motivation and intrinsic motivation. When students feel empowered to choose what they want to do, they are more likely to respond positively to the activities in their education. However, it’s important to note that student autonomy still requires guidance from a teacher. They must be guided by someone to ensure the right path.

A student’s voice can affect instruction, schools, and policies. Different strategies can be used to solicit student input. Some of these strategies change the way school processes work while others are marginal. A school-wide survey provides a snapshot of student views and make it easy to gauge how they have changed over time. Youth participatory action research and democratic classroom practices are other approaches that involve student leadership. Nonetheless, the results are often mixed. So, the best approach is to consider student voice before implementing any changes to instruction or policy.
