The term “student” is typically used in the United Kingdom to describe university students. Informally, first-year students at universities are known as “freshers”; students from later years are referred to as “semi-bejants”.

Whether a college is good for learning isn’t always easy to pin down. Many popular college rankings base their rankings on high school grade point averages and SAT scores. While these metrics can be helpful in narrowing down the field, they don’t reflect the learning that takes place once students enroll. It’s important to establish clear expectations about what’s expected of students.

As a college student, it is important to be aware of the different ways a good student will be assessed. Rather than waiting for a professor to assign assignments, good students actively read ahead. They seek out books related to the subject. They also go above and beyond the call of duty. They don’t just do what’s asked of them; they also take the initiative to learn from mistakes and improve themselves. Using these methods, students may be better able to meet academic standards.

In contrast, lecturers from first and second years generally endorse the negative expectations students have for lecturers. As such, it’s essential to consider if the expectations of students and lecturers are consistent. Some lecturers endorse the positive expectations that first-year students have and others support the negative ones. A good lecturer should make the difference between these two. During a lecture, the learning process can be more effective if both teachers and students are engaged and focused on the subject matter.
