A student is a person who is in school and learning. This person can be a child, a teenager, or an adult studying at a college or university. The younger students are often called pupils. In schools, students often learn from a teacher or lecturer. Students also do a lot of reading. Sometimes, they study for a specific profession.

In the United Kingdom, the term “student” is usually reserved for university students. However, informally, “freshers” is also used to describe new students. Sometimes, it is shortened to “bejant”, which is a contraction of the French word bec-jaune, meaning “yellow beak”. “Semi-bejant” is another term that describes this group.

In the United States, there are 12 years of compulsory schooling. Grades one to eight are solely referred to by numbers, while high school grades nine to twelve have alternative names. However, these names are not universally used in all jurisdictions. In most cases, students go to school until they are 18 years old, after which they can choose whether to pursue further education or enter a technical college.

Depending on what program you choose, you may be required to take more than four years. In Canada, students are often categorized by age, according to their year of school. Freshmen may go straight into college or university, while seniors usually go through four years of college. In some universities, a student may be a super senior if they take longer to complete their degree.
